When people begin planning a renovation, it's easy to focus on finishes, colours and furniture.
Yet, the homes that leave the greatest impression usually begin somewhere else.
They begin with understanding the people who live inside them.
This project reminded us that good interior design isn't about following a particular style.
It's about creating a home that supports everyday life.
Here are five lessons we took away from the project.
1. Design For The Life You Want To Live

Our clients were a busy couple raising two young daughters while balancing demanding careers.
They weren't looking for a dramatic transformation.
They wanted a home that felt noticeably calmer than the lives they led outside it.
Instead of designing around a style, we designed around a feeling.
Soft natural materials, warm timber and an uncluttered palette helped create a space that encouraged the family to slow down the moment they stepped through the door.
What We Can Apply
Before collecting inspiration images, ask yourself one question:
How do I want to feel when I come home?
Your answer will shape better design decisions than any trend.
2. Let Memories Shape Your Design
The inspiration for this home didn't come from Pinterest.
It came from the family's memories of travelling.

Before having children, they often escaped on short holidays where life naturally felt slower and less demanding. Rather than recreating a destination, we focused on recreating the feeling those trips gave them.
That's why the home feels light, relaxed and effortless without directly copying a particular place or style.

The most meaningful inspiration often comes from your own experiences.
Think about the places that have made you feel happiest, calmest or most at ease, then identify the qualities that created those emotions.
3. Light Is A Material Too
Light isn't just something that fills a room. It's part of the design itself.
Here, we chose soft whites, light timber and warm neutrals because they work with natural light rather than compete with it.

As daylight changes throughout the day, so does the atmosphere of the home, making each space feel bright, calm and inviting without relying on bold design features.

Looking back, Sunlit Escapes wasn't really about creating a Japandi home.
